The Sigma 400mm variants are an excellent and affordable alternative to the difficult to find and expensive Sony/Minolta telephoto primes in this range. There are three (at least!) versions of this lens.
First is the Sigma 400mm f5.6 (non-apo) which is general well liked. It is a good option for a long lens but still relatively light (~900g).
There is the Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO which on average gets about the same review as the non-apo, but some forum posts indicate that the APO is superior. The APO is slightly heavier at about 1000g
Then we have the Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO tele macro. This is the most well reviewed lens, the most modern and also heaviest of the group at ~1500g. Removable tripod collar, focus limiter and HSM (silent wave motor) is NOT available on the a-mount version, however it is sometimes listed as such.
Most people say the "tele macro" version can be had for about $500 and the others for less. eBay options are below.
